Nomenclatural history and lectotypification of the name Gentiana algida Pall. (Gentianaceae)
Abstract
The article deals with typification of the name Gentiana algida Pall. The species was published by P. S. Pallas in 1788 from the East Siberia, Transbaikal region and Kamchatka. With a view to find the original material on the name, herbarium specimens of G. algida dated 18th century and conserved in the Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute (LE) were searched out and studied, along with the images of the specimens from the collections of the Natural History Museum, London (BM) and Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum (B) available on the Internet. Less known manuscripts kept in the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPbF ARAN) were involved to interpret the data of the protologue. The doubtless original material of the species includes 7 herbarium specimens conserved in the Herbaria LE and BM, and 3 images, two of them published, and one watercolour drawing preserved in SPbF ARAN. The “holotype” referred to in the worldwide monograph of Gentiana (Ho, Liu, 2001) was not found in LE, and probably does not exist. The specimen LE 01053122 collected on the Sokhondo Mt., Dahuria, by Pallas’ student Nikita Sokolov in 1772, is designated here by T. Krestovskaya as the lectotype of the name.
