Abstract
This article presents data on Iris kamelinii, a species distribution in Altai and Mongolia. Its habit and morphology are similar to I. potaninii, that causes discussion of some authors about the possibility of synonymizing these species. A revision of herbarium material from Central and East Asia Sector, as well as in the Siberian and Far Eastern Sector of the Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LE), as well as a study of cultivated plants, demonstrates that the characters by which I. kamelinii differs from I. potaninii are quite clear and stable and well-described. It differs from the closest species I. potaninii by the structure of sheathing leaves, shape of plate of leaflets of the internal circle of perianth with a deep notch on the top suddenly narrowed to a linear nail in the bottom area and leaflets of the internal circle of perianth. Moreover, the new species is immediately visible in nature, i. e., it forms loose mats rather than “dense patches” like I. potanini. The article provides explanations of the unexpected results of molecular work on the clade by Wilson and Mavrodiev et al., among others. Further study of the details of the detachable sheaths of I. kamelinii confirms the correctness of the species. Thus, seeds of I. kamelinii differ from seeds of I. potaninii by shape, colour, aril shape; they distinguish by the surface of exotesta as well as fine-wrinkled cuticle and the shape of external periclinal wall of exotesta. Both species belong to the section Psammiris.
